My Two Cents: A chat with the brother of comedy icon Sam Kinison
Welcome to the 16th episode of “My Two Cents” with comedian Bill Engvall, the show designed to make you laugh and think! Scroll to the bottom to listen to this week’s episode.
Special Guest Appearance: Bill Kinison, brother of departed comedy legend Sam Kinison
Do you remember Sam Kinison? Bill certainly does. In fact, had Sam not been taken from far too young in tragic car accident almost 25 years ago, Bill thinks Sam would be a household name in comedy — maybe even coming to transcend the genre. Given that Sam started his career in Houston, Bill spent some time in this week’s episode talking about his early days on the comedy scene in Texas. There was the time Bill was the MC for Joe Piscopo’s show, and watched amazed as the SNL veteran was upstaged by a young opener named Eddie Murphy (yeah, that Eddie Murphy). There was also the period that Bill started wearing jeans and sports coat after seeing how well it worked for Jerry Seinfeld. And then there was the time when Bill got a call from a club owner late one night, telling him he needed to get down to the club on amateur night and MC a show for Robin Williams, who had showed up out of the blue and ended up doing 90 minutes for 20 people.
But the meat of this show centered on the other Bill — Bill Kinison, that is. The two talked about Sam’s great career, about how his early days as a Pentecostal preacher well prepared him to carry out his wild style of comedy for 90 minutes each night, about how Bill came to manage his younger brother, about where Sam’s trademark long coat and beret came from and about how Rodney Dangerfield saw Sam’s talent before anyone else did and forged a lasting friendship with the two brothers.
But it wasn’t all reminiscing. Not only did Bill detailed a new box set of his brother Sam’s work that is coming out on Netflix this month, he revealed plans to create a show featuring an interactive hologram of his brother Sam. Listen to the podcast for more details!
